Jeffrey S. Vitter

Jeffrey S. Vitter is the Provost and Executive Vice President of Texas A&M University, the state’s research-intensive flagship university, comprised of 10 nationally recognized colleges, over 46,000 students, and 2,700 faculty.  Dr. Vitter is responsible for all aspects of the vibrant teaching, research, and service activities at the University.

Prior coming to Texas A&M, Dr. Vitter was the Frederick L. Hovde Dean of the College of Science and Professor of Computer Science at Purdue University.  Dr. Vitter served as department chair in Computer Science at Duke University, where he was a distinguished professor from 1993 to 2002.  Previously, from 1980 to 1993, he was on the faculty at Brown University.

A computer scientist, Dr. Vitter's research interests include investigating the rich interdependence between theory and practice. His work in algorithm design and analysis spans several application areas dealing with massive amounts of data, including external memory algorithms, databases, data compression (video, image, and text), sampling, and machine learning.

Dr. Vitter received a BS in Mathematics with highest honors from the University of Notre Dame in 1977, a PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1980, and an MBA from Duke University in 2002.
